Currently there are many different grip certifications available for numerous disciplines of grip by way of different organizations, i.e. Ironmind, The Gripboard, David Horne’s world of grip, Fat Bastard Barbell Company, and RB Germany to name just a few.
However, I would like to see more available certification options/choices for a “gripster” to certify on. The most popular certification amongst people just getting into “grip” is to certify on a torsion spring hand gripper, but there are many more grip disciplines than just grippers which I will get into later on, but first I want to explain what got my gears turning in the first place to build this site.
I personally got into grip training by learning about the almighty “Captains of Crush #3” (where most of us grip nutz got started). I bought a few grippers to play with, including the #3. I was amazed at the difficulty of this gripper and it was at that point when I decided to make certifying on the #3 gripper my goal. I quickly became obsessed and eventually met my goal, but what I’ve realized since then is that without a certification process in place, I probably wouldn’t have ever met my goal … I wanted to see my name on that list if it killed me. My point is this: Certifications have kept me motivated in grip training and has made it lots of fun along the way. Some people don’t care to see their name on a list, but it’s the competitive nature in most that tell us we do. It’s for the same reason an NFL football player proudly wears his super bowl ring, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu artist wears his black belt, why medals and trophies are made …. Having your name on a certification list is a “gripster’s” trophy. In a way it makes you immortal as long as the certification lists withstand the tests of time. There is a lot of speculation as to some of the strength feats some of the old timers have performed. I bet some of the old-time strongmen would’ve appreciated a well documented source to backup their claims when challenged. This is why I’ve decided to develop this site – a lot of doubters out there.
As I mentioned before, there are a lot of existing grip related certifications, but there are so many more possible certs that are not available. Pinch grip has been rising in popularity lately and happens to be what I’m interested in most at this time. This is a weak area of my grip that I’m trying to build up which contributes to my current interests. gripcerts.com will have a limitless combination of pinch certs as this is a grip discipline with so many possibilities. Thick bar/support grip is a huge category as well along with vertical bar, “hubbing”, and the lists will go on and on. I will elaborate a little bit on pinch and thick bar to create some examples, but I won’t go into much detail on all the disciplines at this time as this page is simply to get you a little background on what gripcerts.com is intended to encompass. I’m going to list some quick example of certs I have in mind. Once you hear them you will realize how many more there are to think about. For example: Currently, lifting the Inch dumbbell and the Blob at the same time can get your name on a list featured on the Gripboard under "Gripboard Records and Stats" … as long as you complete the feat under the Gripboard's rules that are in place, but what about the inch and 2 x 45’s? or the inch and 3 x 25’s? or 2 x 45’s in each hand? … I think you get the idea. I’m not going to waste my time in creating a list for all the combinations up front. I will simply add the cert lists as the grip feats are performed and submitted. This will let YOU be creative. If you are the first to submit a feat to gripcerts.com that doesn’t already have an existing list, your name will simply be at the top when approved. I’m also interested in having a “Two Hands Pinch” list. The list would not in any way, shape, or form, take the place of the existing “Top 50” list that is already in place. It could simply be looked at in addition to the Top 50 list. The difference will be that the lifts do not need to take place in competition. I believe the 2HP list on gripcerts.com will be a great motivator to compete against yourself by giving you more opportunities as the lifts do not have to be performed in contest. Rules explaining how to certify on gripcerts.com will come later.
I hope you like the idea of gripcerts.com so far and again, there will be a lot more to the site than the little bit of information I have mentioned thus far, so stay tuned as the site is under construction. Post Script – I am open for any interests/suggestions you may have so feel free to email me with whatever it is that you would like to see on gripcerts.com at admin@certjunkies.com.
